For humans the sea is an immense force – untameable and the source of life. It allows travel, but is changeable and dangerous. Moved by the moon, the sea represents uncontrolled and creative power: the sea is the Great Mother.
The arts and myths explore these two aspects of the ocean: its destructive power; and its ability to create and support life.
A third aspect of the sea – its mystery and unexplored depth – and the strangeness of the creatures that have been glimpsed by human beings has given rise to tales of monsters.
